Art PosterEach year for over four decades, the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission's annual art poster has showcased a different, talented local artist. This tradition lives on in 2014. Poster donations help support the Commission's mission and programs: fostering public participation, increasing access, and forging alliances in support of local arts, culture and history. Production of the poster was generously supported by Alliant Energy.

2014 Art Poster

2014 Art Poster

This year's poster features a pastel painting, Steadfast by Madison artist Kay Brathol-Hostvet.  For the majority of Kay's career, her primary focus has been the Midwestern landscape; her pastels are often a celebration of the land and its inhabitants. While the works may look photorealistic, they are carefully designed for emotional impact - they are a synthesis of the landscape tradition and self-expression - and have been referred to as Contemporary Regionalism and "emotive paintings."

Artist Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Kay Brathol-Hostvet was born in Baldwin, Wisconsin.  She began her career as a professional artist in the mid-1980s doing independent and commissioned work in soft pastel.  Mid-career, she studied at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts in May, 2000 with concentrations in painting and life drawing. Brathol-Hostvet is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America.  Her pastel and acrylic paintings are in private and corporate collections around the Midwest; she is represented by Artisan Gallery in Paoli and Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin.  The artist works from her home studio in Madison in addition to teaching art workshops in drawing, design, pastel and acrylic at various facilities around Wisconsin, Illinois, and Arizona.
